DIY Epoxy Kits vs. Professional Installation

It is tempting to grab a $200 epoxy kit from a local hardware store and spend a weekend rolling it onto your garage floor. However, in the Mountain West, these DIY kits almost always fail within the first year. Here is the hard truth about DIY epoxy versus professional installation.

    The Problem with DIY Kits

    1. Inadequate Surface Prep

DIY kits rely on "acid etching" to prep the concrete. Acid etching rarely opens the pores of hard-troweled concrete sufficiently. It also leaves behind an acidic residue that acts as a bond breaker, preventing the epoxy from adhering.

    2. Water-Based Materials

Most retail kits are 40-50% water or solvent. As they cure, the liquids evaporate, leaving a paper-thin shell on your floor. This thin layer cannot withstand hot tires, dropping tools, or road salts.

    3. Hot Tire Pickup

Because the prep is poor and the material is thin, the heat from your car tires softens the DIY epoxy. When you back out, the tire tread literally peels the coating off the floor.

    The Professional Difference

    1. Mechanical Diamond Grinding

Professionals use heavy planetary diamond grinders to physically remove the top layer of concrete. This creates a rough profile (CSP 2 or 3) that allows the base coat to wick deep into the pores, creating a permanent mechanical bond.

    2. 100% Solids & Polyaspartic

We use 100% solids epoxy primers and polyaspartic topcoats. What we roll onto the floor stays on the floor—no evaporation. This creates a thick, structural armor that is 4x stronger than DIY paint.

    3. Moisture Mitigation

Professionals test for moisture vapor transmission and apply specialized vapor barriers to prevent the coating from blistering and blowing off from underneath.

    The Hidden Cost of DIY

When a DIY kit fails (and it will), you must pay a professional to grind off the sticky, failing mess before a new system can be installed. This "removal fee" often makes the total cost much higher than if you had hired a professional in the first place.
