The Problem with DIY Kits
1. Inadequate Surface Prep
DIY kits rely on "acid etching" to prep the concrete. Acid etching rarely opens the pores of hard-troweled concrete sufficiently. It also leaves behind an acidic residue that acts as a bond breaker, preventing the epoxy from adhering.
2. Water-Based Materials
Most retail kits are 40-50% water or solvent. As they cure, the liquids evaporate, leaving a paper-thin shell on your floor. This thin layer cannot withstand hot tires, dropping tools, or road salts.
3. Hot Tire Pickup
Because the prep is poor and the material is thin, the heat from your car tires softens the DIY epoxy. When you back out, the tire tread literally peels the coating off the floor.
